Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Finding Relief From Sudden, Overwhelming Fear

Panic attacks are intense, frightening episodes of sudden fear that often come out of nowhere. In the moment, they can feel like a heart attack or medical emergency—but they’re psychological in nature, and they’re more common than you might think.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with panic attacks or living in fear of the next one, you’re not alone—and there is help.

What Is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is a brief period of intense fear that peaks quickly, usually within 10 minutes, and generally ends within 20 to 30 minutes. While panic attacks are not physically dangerous, they can feel terrifying and disruptive.

Common Symptoms Include:

    • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
    • Chest pain or discomfort
    • Chills or hot flashes
    • Shortness of breath or feelings of suffocation
    • Nausea or stomach distress
    • Trembling or shaking
    • Sweating
    • Feelings of detachment or unreality

These symptoms can be so intense that many people believe they’re experiencing a heart attack or medical crisis.

What Is Panic Disorder?

While some people experience panic attacks only once or occasionally, others may develop panic disorder—a type of anxiety disorder. Panic disorder is diagnosed when someone has had at least two panic attacks and begins to fear having more, often changing their behavior to avoid potential triggers.

Over time, this fear can lead to the development of phobias, including fear of public spaces (agoraphobia), crowded places, or situations where escape feels difficult.

Treatment for Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Panic disorder can feel isolating and overwhelming—but it is also highly treatable. At Whole Kids Co., we work with individuals to create a personalized treatment plan that may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify and reframe the thoughts that fuel anxiety
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques to calm the nervous system
  • Lifestyle changes, including regular exercise and limiting caffeine or other stimulants
  • Medication, when appropriate, to help manage symptoms
  • Education and support to understand what’s happening in the body and mind
