At Whole Kids Co., we use a variety of therapeutic techniques to support children’s emotional and mental well-being—one of which is Sand Tray Therapy. This technique, often used as part of Play Therapy, offers children a developmentally appropriate, nonverbal way to explore and express their inner experiences.
What is Sand Tray Therapy?
Sand Tray Therapy is a supportive and creative tool that involves the use of a sandbox, miniature figures, and sometimes water. Children use these elements to build scenes that represent their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. These “miniature worlds” can reveal emotional struggles, personal challenges, or inner strengths that the child may not be able to verbalize directly.
This technique is used in combination with play therapy, allowing our trained clinicians to guide children in processing what they create in the sand. Through this process, children gain insight, emotional awareness, and new ways to cope with their challenges—all within a safe and compassionate therapeutic environment.
Sand Tray Therapy Techniques may be Beneficial for Children Experiencing:
- Anxiety or depression
- Grief or loss
- Trauma or past adverse experiences
- Emotional regulation struggles
- Behavioral or relational challenges
This technique allows children to engage in therapy at their own pace, using creativity and symbolism to express themselves safely and meaningfully.
