Who is a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)?

A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), or “Speech Therapist,” specializes in evaluating and treating communication and feeding disorders. Their training includes:

  • 4 years of undergraduate education
  • 2 years of graduate education
  • 1 year Clinical Fellowship under supervision

SLPs work with individuals of all ages (infancy to adulthood) in various settings, including schools, home health, hospitals, clinics, and memory care facilities.

Alternative & Augmentative Communication (ACC)

    • Uses gestures more often than words
    • Uses a device (e.g., iPad, tablet) to communicate

Hearing

    • Uses hearing aids or a cochlear implant
    • Struggles to understand speech in noisy environments
    • Frequently asks for repetition or clarification
